Hamilton Walk

October 16, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

On October 16th 1843, Sir. William Rowan Hamilton while walking into Dublin from Dunsink, realized that he could use a system with four dimensions, and this system would be useful for understanding rotations in three dimensions.  This system became known as Quaternions, and is widely used today in satellite navigation and computer graphics. He used his penknife to etch his equation into the bridge at Broombridge.

The Hamilton Walk is jointly organised by Maynooth University and DIAS annually, and on this walk we retrace Hamilton’s steps from the Observatory to the bridge to celebrate this mathematical leap. Advance booking is essential and places are extremely limited so book early, tickets are now available at hamiltonwalk.eventbrite.ie!

EVENT IS SUBJECT TO LICENCE.
